The Hellenic Society for the Environment and Cultural Heritage (ELLET) and associations on Patmos face intimidation lawsuits, known as SLAPPs, over efforts to halt what was found to be illegal construction in the island’s north.
The actions follow campaigns to protect the natural and cultural environment. Similar lawsuits have targeted groups and journalists elsewhere in Greece.
ELLET president Lydia Karra said, “Intimidation lawsuits are a problem for democracy. You cannot obstruct groups working for the public good, offering their time and knowledge without compensation.”
Lawyer Giorgos Politis said these kinds of abusive lawsuits discouraging public participation have become a major concern.
One local leader, Ioanna Memou, said tourism pressure fuels illegal building. She noted that 86% of Patmos’ development lies outside planning zones.
