Running at Camden libraries under the theme “Once Upon an…Invention,” the programme starts with children reading a picture book about plastic pollution before designing and building their own robot boats to help clean up the environment.
The scheme combines literacy with hands-on STEM learning and aims to inspire environmental action. Children test their inventions in a mini ‘River Thames’ pool and examine 3D-printed models of real-world plastic clean-up technologies before they start building.
Science Owl’s founder said: “The programme is run by Science Owl, which I founded to switch up the conversation about environmental issues. We like to focus on getting kids involved and excited about environmental solutions so that they see that they can make a difference.”
Ideas from children so far have included conveyor belts, grabbers, and even a catapult-style device for removing plastic from the water.
The sessions are designed not only to entertain but also to empower young people to believe they can make a positive impact on the environment.
