GB News was halted on Thursday morning in a major blow to US President Donald Trump. The news channel, hosted by Cameron Walker and Ellie Costello, shared an update on the leading politician seeking out a peace deal as the breaking banner flashed across the screen.
They welcomed defence analyst and former British army officer, Lieutenant Colonel Stuart Crawford to the show to analyse President Trump’s claims that the Iran conflict will be “over quickly”. He pointed out that “Iran is not defeated and the war has not been won,” despite what Trump claims. He continued: “We still don’t really know what the strategic aim of the US offensive on Iran was… nobody really knows. But everyone always knew, and no pun intended here, but Iran’s trump card was always going to be to close the Strait of Hormuz. And it looks as though Trump and his administration have got into a conflict and can’t find their way out.”
“He has threatened to resume air strikes if he doesn’t get a deal before then,” she added. “Surely he doesn’t want to do that? He wants this war to be over. So where does that leave us?”
The show guest replied to say that there are two ends to the spectrum. “One is that Trump declares victory and walks away and leaves other people to clear up the mess,” he explained. “Which might suit him, but will not suit the rest of the world.
“And the other one is to go all in and force the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and defeat Iran militarily. But that will entail a huge and immense military effort and include committing ground troops, which of course, nobody wants to happen.”
He added that Trump will “want to be well clear” the Iran war in the run up to the looming elections in November, “if he can”.
Mr Crawford also said: “Everyone wants a negotiated settlement but I don’t see one on the horizon.”
