Councillor Eleanor Stringer, Labour’s deputy leader of Merton Council, says she is “really proud of the team and how hard we worked for this election”.
They have won 17 of the 22 seats declared so far.
She says: “It tells us that local residents are really happy with what we’re delivering in Merton for our residents.
“We’ve got lower council tax than any of the lived-in boroughs nearby whilst investing in our local services.
“We’ve got brilliant parks, we’ve been investing in services like pop-up tips, new street trees, and residents really, really appreciate that.
“It’s the local stuff that matters. It’s our community and we care about it.”
Asked about mounting pressure on the prime minister, she says “it’s far too early” to talk about that.
She adds: “I think we need to continue to put the country first, put residents first and stay away from some of those arguments.”
