Uniqlo Announces Major UK Expansion Strategy with Four New Store Openings
Japanese global apparel retailer Uniqlo has unveiled an ambitious growth strategy for the United Kingdom, confirming plans to open four new stores as it continues to capitalize on its surging popularity among British shoppers.
Since entering the UK market in 2001, the brand has established a footprint of 24 stores across major metropolitan hubs, including London, Bristol, and Birmingham. Renowned for its focus on high-quality, functional “LifeWear,” the retailer is now set to further cement its presence across the country with a series of strategic openings.
The Cambridge Debut
The next major milestone in the expansion is the opening of a new 9,472 sq ft store located at the Grand Arcade on St Andrew’s Street in Cambridge. Scheduled for September 24, 2026, the two-story retail space will house the brand’s core womenswear and menswear collections.
To mark the launch, the store will feature the brand’s highly anticipated Autumn/Winter 2026 range, including signature items such as cashmere knitwear, Soufflé Yarn pieces, and Puffertech outerwear. In a bid to attract a crowd, Uniqlo will offer goodie bags to the first 300 customers who spend over £69.90.
Alessandro Dudech, Chief Operating Officer of Uniqlo UK, expressed enthusiasm for the new location. “We have been looking forward to opening here and becoming part of the community,” Dudech said, noting that Cambridge’s unique blend of students, academics, and international visitors makes it an ideal fit for the brand. The opening day will also feature traditional Japanese Taiko drumming performances and an app-exclusive competition offering shoppers a chance to win a trip to Tokyo.
Strengthening Regional Footprints
Beyond Cambridge, the retailer is intensifying its efforts in the North of England. This autumn, Uniqlo will open a sprawling 24,000 sq ft store at Manchester’s Trafford Centre. This addition will make Manchester the first UK city outside of London to host two Uniqlo locations, complementing its existing site on Market Street.
Looking ahead to 2027, the company has also confirmed plans to expand into London’s Canary Wharf and Leeds’ prestigious Briggate. Commenting on the Canary Wharf addition, Stuart Fyfe, Managing Director of Retail, Leisure, and Hospitality at Canary Wharf Group, stated: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome Uniqlo to Canary Wharf. They have built a strong reputation amongst shoppers, and we are confident they will be a fantastic addition to our retail mix.”
Financial Success Driving Growth
The expansion comes on the heels of a strong financial performance for Uniqlo’s parent company, Fast Retailing. Last month, the firm increased its full-year operating profit forecast to ¥730bn (£3.37bn), following a robust third quarter that saw operating profits jump 45.7% to ¥213.8bn (£986.26m).
This retail momentum is consistent with the brand’s ongoing investment in its existing estate. Earlier this year, the company successfully completed a 30% expansion of its Covent Garden store in London, bringing the total square footage to 18,300. As the brand continues to scale its operations, it remains a key player in the UK expansion of accessible, high-quality fashion.
