Tunley Environmental has published A Guide to Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), with which the sustainability consultancy is aiming to help organisations better understand how verified environmental product data can support regulatory compliance and commercial strategy.
The guide, which is aimed at businesses working across sectors such as manufacturing, construction and infrastructure, has been developed in response to the increasing pressure being placed on organisations to provide transparent information about the environmental impact of products throughout their lifecycle.
Important role
“EPDs are quickly becoming an important part of how organisations demonstrate transparency, meet regulatory expectations and compete among competition,” commented Tunley Environmental‘s Dr Gareth Davies. “This guide is designed to help businesses understand what EPDs are, how to use them effectively and how to support both compliance and commercial results.”
According to the International EPD System, more than 9,000 EPDs were published in 2025 alone, with said declarations increasingly being used to support compliance with reporting and certification frameworks including the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), BREEAM and LEED.
Focus areas
The guide seeks to provide a structured overview of how EPDs work, how they are developed and how organisations can use them – according to Tunley Environmental, it is designed for ‘commercial stakeholders looking to move beyond high-level sustainability commitments and apply robust data to procurement, reporting and product positioning’.
Among the areas covered include how EPDs differ from LCAs and product carbon footprint calculations; how organisations can interpret environmental data linked to lifecycle stages, system boundaries and environmental indicators; the role of international standards including ISO 14025 and EN 15804 in supporting consistency and comparability; the process of developing an EPD, from data collection through to third-party verification; and how organisations can use EPDs to improve tender success, strengthen ESG reporting, and differentiate themselves in competitive markets.
