Ormiston Sudbury Academy welcomes praise for positive learning environment in latest Ofsted report


A Sudbury school has welcomed recognition from Ofsted for its strong learning environment and culture in its first report under the new inspection framework.

Ormiston Sudbury Academy (OSA), in Tudor Road, received the ‘expected standard’ rating in five of six assessment categories, following a formal Ofsted inspection in February.

Rather than an overall grade, Ofsted now rates schools across various areas, including curriculum and teaching, inclusion, behaviour, personal development and leadership.

The report described OSA as a positive and inclusive community, where pupils ‘contribute meaningfully to school life’ and show ‘healthy respect for one another and acceptance of differences’.

They also found that staff ‘feel looked after’ by their leaders and praised the systems in place that allowed them to share and develop effective practice.

“The emphasis on maintaining attention, supporting pupils to remember the curriculum and helping pupils to think deeply is having a positive impact,” the report reads.

“Pupils who are in receipt of additional support are being supported to reduce the gaps that they have in their knowledge and understanding.

“Many pupils take part in the array of extracurricular opportunities, ranging from learning Japanese to finding out about their heritage in ancestry club.”

Inspectors highlighted that further work is needed to improve academic outcomes, but added that clear plans have been put in place to facilitate this.

Sally Morris, OSA principal, said: “We are pleased that Ofsted has recognised the calm, focused learning environment and the positive way in which pupils engage in their lessons.

“Pupils demonstrate a strong sense of belonging within our community, reflecting the supportive culture we have established.

“This report reflects the dedication of our staff and their commitment to ensuring every pupil is supported to engage positively with their learning and achieve their potential.

“While we recognise there is more to do, we are encouraged by the progress being made and remain focused on continuing to improve outcomes for all pupils.”

“It is particularly encouraging to see the impact of leaders’ work in strengthening pupils’ engagement with learning and improving outcomes.

“The trust will continue to work closely with the academy to build on this progress and ensure every young person can fulfil their potential.”
