Long before leisure centres became the norm across south Wales outdoor lidos offered people a place to cool off and enjoy the summer months. At one time there were more than 57 outdoor pools in Wales.
In Troedyrhiw, Merthyr Tydfil, generations of families climbed the hillside to enjoy the spring-fed pool. Built by unemployed miners in 1934, it was a tough time for those living in the area back then.
The Merthyr Express stated in 1964: “The year 1934 was not a prosperous one for the people of south Wales.
“There were many unemployed in the area. But this helped the venture. Mr Murray Threipland provided all the materials necessary and the men of the village wielded picks and shovels voluntarily.” Full story here
