Veteran Handscomb and Rising Talent Eye Test Selection in Australia A’s India Tour
Australia has unveiled its squad for the upcoming tour of India, with a strategic blend of seasoned veterans and emerging talent looking to prove their mettle in subcontinent conditions. The tour, which encompasses both red-ball and white-ball fixtures, serves as a critical proving ground for players aiming to break into the senior Test setup.
The most notable inclusion is 35-year-old batter Peter Handscomb, who has been granted another opportunity to stake his claim for a national team return. Handscomb, the most experienced member of the four-day squad, has not featured for Australia since the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy tour. His presence in India this time around is seen as a deliberate move to utilize his expertise against spin on challenging pitches.
Bolstering the Pace Battery
The four-day squad also features the return of Jhye Richardson, whose inclusion is a major talking point. After overcoming a series of major shoulder surgeries that stalled his career, the pace bowler’s return to first-class cricket is a significant boost for Australian depth. He is joined in the pace department by Brendan Doggett, with both bowlers expected to face rigorous testing in the four-day match scheduled for Puducherry.
Youth and Future Planning
While the veterans look to reclaim their spots, the tour places a heavy emphasis on future stars. Young speedster Mahli Beardman—who made an impressive T20I debut earlier this year—has been named in the one-day squad. His progress is being carefully managed following back stress issues, but his inclusion highlights the high regard in which he is held by selectors.
Other notable names include Sam Konstas, Todd Murphy, and Nathan McSweeney, who return to the squad after gaining valuable experience during last year’s fixtures in Lucknow. Sam Harper has also earned a call-up following a breakout domestic season, while the squad features a versatile mix of talent intended to build depth for future international assignments.

George Bailey, Australia’s chief selector, emphasized that these tours are vital for development. “We consider these tours an important part of performance and developing game styles in subcontinent conditions as part of our continued investment into the Australia A program,” Bailey said. “It’s a strong representation of players who will be in contention to be part of the group we take to India next year or see as having potential for further opportunities into the future.”
The Australia A side will begin their tour in Puducherry with a four-day match before transitioning into a series of three 50-over encounters.
