Heavy rain and thunder swept across the region in the early hours of Thursday
Thunderstorms rattled windows and woke Yorkshire residents in the early hours as the record-breaking heatwave came to an end overnight.
Heavy rain and thunder swept across the region in the early hours of Thursday (May 28), with residents from Huddersfield to Wakefield taking to Facebook to share their experiences.
Vicky Bradshaw, from Huddersfield, said it was “one of the loudest I’ve heard in years”, adding: “As for the rain, well my god it’s bouncing down!!”
In Havercroft, Fiona Walker was woken at just after 4am. She said: “The rumbles was that intense my windows rattled. I love a good storm but seriously its my day off bang goes my lay in.”
Janine Howarth agreed the early morning storm was something else, writing: “Its rumbling again but nothing like the wake up call at half 3 this morning that shook my windows.”
The storms were reported across a wide area, with residents in Bradford, Elland, Wakefield, Ossett, Brighouse and Gomersal all reporting thunder and lightning.
Sophie Louise Bannister said the storm had been relentless, saying: “We’ve had thunder and lightning since 12:50 this morning and it’s still going now.”
Not everyone was unhappy about being woken. Mark Foran, from Bradford, said: “Just woke up to thunder again in Bradford lol love it.” Ellen Lawton, from Mirfield, added: “Not had one here like this in so long.”
The storms mark the end of a record-breaking heatwave, after Tuesday became the hottest May day on record for both England and Wales, with Kew Gardens provisionally reaching 35.1C. Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill described the temperatures as “exceptional”, saying: “It really is an exceptionally warm or very hot spell at the moment — for May in particular, it is still meteorological spring.”
The Met Office has warned further rain may reach parts of the UK over the weekend, before warmer and drier conditions return.
