North East Lincolnshire is using World Environment Day on 5 June to reinforce the economic and environmental importance of its coastal and wetland assets, while encouraging residents and businesses to support long-term conservation efforts.
The area contains a network of protected landscapes, including wetlands, saltmarshes, sand dunes and nature reserves that support biodiversity and form part of wider coastal defence and climate resilience infrastructure. These ecosystems also play a role in carbon storage and flood management, adding to their strategic value for the region.
Local authorities and conservation partners are continuing work to manage habitats that support migratory bird populations and other protected species along the coastline. The area forms part of a wider ecological network of nationally significant environmental sites.
Among the projects currently underway is the DUNE initiative, funded through the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The programme is designed to improve public understanding of protected coastal environments and encourage responsible access to natural spaces, with the aim of reducing disruption to sensitive habitats and wildlife.
North East Lincolnshire Council is also continuing environmental programmes linked to recycling, biodiversity, green space maintenance and sustainable transport. Other activity includes tree planting, coastal management measures and public awareness campaigns focused on reducing environmental impact.
Cleethorpes Coastal Ranger Josh Forrester, who organises regular nature walks to connect people with the extraordinary nature on their doorstep, said: “North East Lincolnshire is incredibly fortunate to have such a rich and diverse natural environment.
“World Environment Day is a chance for all of us to reflect on the role we can play in protecting it. Whether it’s supporting projects like DUNE, caring for our coastline, or making greener choices at home, every action counts.
“Together, we can ensure that North East Lincolnshire’s unique landscapes and wildlife continue to thrive for generations to come.”
Residents and visitors are being encouraged to support conservation efforts through practical actions such as cutting waste, taking part in local environmental activities and respecting protected natural areas.
