A man strolls into a watch boutique and beckons the sales assistant. “I’m looking for a white gold pocket watch,” the customer says. “Except the cover must be decorated with a full-colour image of a Tyrannosaurus rex made of hand-cut leather mosaic pieces. Oh, and the dinosaur’s eye should be grand-feu enamel, if possible.”
That, it’s fair to say, would be an outrageously niche request. But Hermès specialises in such weird and wonderful creations. Its Arceau Pocket Aaaaargh! Minute Repeater offered exactly that pocket watch with a tourbillon and minute repeater no less, for a price-tag of almost half a million dollars. Nor is that the only horological oddity among the brand’s wares. Hankering for a watch dial sporting a zombie cowboy riding a skeleton horse? Hermès has you covered there, too.
