Van Oord UK and a consortium including Volker Stevin have won places on a £1.23bn Environment Agency framework for beach management and coastal protection work across England.
The two suppliers were named on the Beach Management Framework, which will cover routine and ad hoc maintenance across coastal frontages managed by the agency.
VBA is a joint venture between VolkerStevin, Boskalis Westminster and AtkinsRéalis.
The framework will be used to move shingle from areas of accretion to areas of erosion and redistribute it to maintain flood protection.
It will also cover the import of marine-dredged or land-based shingle to replenish lost material on coastal frontages.
Other works could include repairs to coastal defences and structures, rock placement, incident response, recovery and readiness support after extreme weather events.
The Environment Agency said the work was needed to reduce the risk of coastal flooding to residential properties and commercial businesses.
The framework was valued at £1.23bn excluding VAT, or £1.47bn including VAT, according to the contract notice.
It was signed on 21 April 2026 and will run until 20 April 2032, with a possible two-year extension to 20 April 2034.
The notice said the agency would decide at the end of year four whether to use the two-year extension.
The framework can be used by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and its associated bodies in England.
It can also be used by local authorities, internal drainage boards, central government departments, executive agencies and non-departmental public bodies in England.
Call-off contracts can be placed by award without competition or through further competition between Van Oord and VBA.
