PM Modi set to announce historic BBL opener in Chennai during Australia visit
The first Big Bash League match to be played on Indian soil is reportedly set to be announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Sydney from July 8 to 10.
According to 7Cricket journalist Tom Morris, Modi is expected to make the formal announcement, which will usher in a new era of partnership between the two countries.
Cricket Australia had already identified the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai as the preferred venue earlier this year.
Both the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association and the BCCI responded positively to the proposal, giving CA the assurance it needed to push forward.
A five-member CA delegation flew to Chennai to conduct a venue inspection at CSK’s final home IPL match of the season. BCCI president Mithun Manhas was also present at the ground during that visit.

However, talks are still ongoing on both sides, and some within CA are said to have reservations about how quickly developments have moved in India.
The formal announcement from Modi will bring the process into the open, but there is still work to be done before the match is confirmed in full.

Cricket Australia wary of Chennai’s winter rains
Early conversations had raised the possibility of hosting more than one BBL fixture in India, but scheduling realities have narrowed that down to a single opener.

Defending champions Perth Scorchers could be among the teams involved. The BBL typically begins in December, which also happens to be the height of Chennai’s winter monsoon season.
Hence, both boards will need to keep in mind the rain factor before announcing the fixture.
The Bigger Picture: A historic BBL is on the cards
Hosting a BBL match in India is a smart move for Cricket Australia, and Chennai is the right city for it. The MA Chidambaram Stadium is one of cricket’s most iconic venues with a passionate crowd.
Moreover, cricket’s commercial corridors run through India, and bringing an Australian domestic competition to Indian soil acknowledges that reality.

Nonetheless, the monsoon concern is real and should not be brushed aside. If rain does not play spoilsport, then it should be a cracker of a match.
