With nearly half of 2026 already behind us, Hindi cinema is heading into what could be one of its most crucial phases of the year. This Friday, a day traditionally considered vital for the box office, Indian cinemas will witness the release of nine films carrying significant commercial expectations.
From Kangana Ranaut‘s Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata to the Telugu drama Sing Geetham and Hollywood release Backrooms, the industry will be banking on these releases to deliver a strong run at the box office and provide a much-needed boost to theatrical business during summer.
Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata
In Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata, Kangana Ranaut plays a staff nurse, bringing to life the story of one of the healthcare workers who emerged as an unsung hero during the Mumbai terror attacks. The film aims to highlight the courage, dedication and resilience displayed by hospital staff who continued serving patients in the face of unimaginable adversity.
The film features an ensemble cast including Girija Oak, Smita Tambe, Amrutha Namdev, Esha Dey, Priya Berde, Asha Shelar, Suhita Thatte, Rasika Aghase, Aditya Mishra and Zahid Khan in pivotal roles.
Written and directed by Manoj Tapadia, Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata is slated to hit theatres on June 12.
Main Vaapas Aaunga
The film is a deeply emotional, multigenerational romantic drama from director Imtiaz Ali that weaves together themes of memory, longing and unfinished love.
At its heart is an elderly Partition survivor, played by Naseeruddin Shah, whose fading memories lead him back to a romance that began in 1947. As the narrative moves between past and present, it unravels the poignant love story of two young lovers, portrayed by Vedang Raina and Sharvari, whose lives are torn apart by the upheaval of Partition.
Directed by Imtiaz Ali, Main Vaapas Aaunga stars Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah, Sharvari and Vedang Raina in key roles. The music has been composed by AR Rahman, with lyrics by Irshad Kamil.
It will release in theatres on June 12.
Governor: The Silent Saviour
Manoj Bajpayee is set to headline Governor: The Silent Saviour, inspired by India’s economic crisis of the early 1990s. The actor portrays S Venkitaramanan, the former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, and his pivotal role in steering the nation away from the brink of financial collapse. Set against a backdrop of economic turmoil and political uncertainty, the film explores how he navigated mounting challenges behind the scenes to help prevent a national bankruptcy and stabilise the country’s economy.
Directed by Chinmay D Mandlekar, the Hindi film is scheduled to hit theatres on June 12.
The Maharashtra Files
The Maharashtra Files is positioned as a political drama that delves into themes of corruption, power struggles, and the human cost of development. At the centre of the story is a controversial highway project, whose aftermath sparks questions about land acquisition, governance and justice.
The narrative explores allegations of corruption, the widening gap between the treatment of farmers and industrialists, and the impact of political decisions on ordinary citizens.
The Maharashtra Files features an ensemble cast including Mangesh Desai, Usha Nadkarni, Sayaji Shinde and Nagesh Bhosale. The film also includes appearances by Sunny Leone, Sapna Chaudhary and Gautami Patil.
Heer Sara
Directed by Kartik Chaudhry, Heer Sara is a coming-of-age road-trip drama that follows a journey of self-discovery, friendship and personal freedom. Through the experiences of its central characters, the film explores themes of identity, the expectations imposed on women by society and the courage required to challenge those boundaries.
Set against the backdrop of a transformative road trip, the story delves into emotional growth, companionship and the search for a life on one’s own terms.
The film stars Arif Zakaria, Nishank Verma and Shveta Salve in key roles alongside the lead cast. The film will release in theatres on June 12.
Backrooms
Backrooms is adapted from Parsons’ viral YouTube series of the same name, which he launched as a teenager on his Kane Pixels channel. The found footage-style series follows fictional researchers exploring mysterious liminal spaces. The feature film, which released on May 29, opened in 3,442 theatres across North America.
The film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Avan Jogia and Lukita Maxwell. Parsons co-wrote the screenplay with Will Soodik, while James Wan, Shawn Levy and Osgood Perkins served as producers. Chernin Entertainment co-produced and co-financed the film.
It will release in theatres on June 12.
Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past
The story follows a man who retreats to a secluded mansion in the Indian mountains in an attempt to escape the shadows of his past. However, what begins as a search for refuge soon turns into a nightmare as he discovers that the house is hiding dark secrets of its own. As unsettling events unfold, he finds himself trapped in a web of fear, trauma and mystery, forced to confront both the horrors lurking within the mansion and the demons he has been running from.
The film will release in theatres on June 12.
Varavu
Directed by Shaji Kailas and written by AK Saajan, the Malayalam film is a gritty action-survival thriller centred on Polachan, played by Joju George. A wealthy planter and former convict, Polachan returns to his hometown in the Kerala highlands with a mission to confront the influential figures who once wronged him.
As he takes on a powerful and corrupt local establishment, old rivalries resurface, setting the stage for a tense battle driven by revenge, survival and justice.
Sing Geetham
The Telugu drama, Sing Geetham, follows a young man named Prathap, who travels to a mysterious and isolated village called Kubera Puram in search of better opportunities. Once there, he is drawn into strange and uncontrollable events stemming from a peculiar village curse that forces everyone to sing rather than speak.
Directed by the 94-year-old filmmaker, the musical fantasy was initially scheduled for release on June 11, 2026. However, it now appears that the makers have decided to push the release by a day.
Not just theatres, the OTT releases have also bombarded the Friday window with major releases.
Raakh
Starring Sonali Bendre, Ali Fazal and Aamir Bashir in lead roles, The prime Video series is an investigative crime drama that delves into the complexities of the criminal mind and the hidden darkness lurking beneath ordinary lives.
The series centres on the mysterious disappearance of two teenagers, an incident that devastates a close-knit family and sends shockwaves through an entire city. As a determined investigating officer embarks on an extensive search for answers, he finds himself drawn deeper into a disturbing world marked by violence, secrets and human depravity. What begins as a missing persons case gradually unfolds into a gripping exploration of crime, obsession and the darker side of human nature.
