The Met Office has warned that “very hot and humid” weather will continue in the South West and Channel Islands ahead of predicted thunderstorms later.
Temperatures soared well above 30C across Cornwall, Devon, Guernsey and Jersey on Wednesday which led to schools closing and travel disruption. Exeter recorded its hottest June day on record as temperatures reached 35C (89.6F) at Exeter Airport.
The Met Office, external said temperatures later could reach 32C (89.6F) in Cornwall, external, 34C (93.2F) in Devon, external, 37C (98.6F) in Guernsey, external and 39C (102.2F) in Jersey, external, ahead of predicted thunderstorms concentrated in Cornwall and the Channel Islands.
It said the weather would be “turning even hotter as the day goes on with extreme heat continuing along with high humidity” with thundery showers likely.
Sixty schools across Devon, external are now either closed to pupils or have reduced the length of their days due to the heat, while 21 schools in Cornwall, external have taken similar measures.
Great Western Railway network has warned train services running across the whole network may be cancelled, delayed or revised due to the heat, external.
