Ryan Reynolds’s portrayal of Deadpool has turned the character into a box office success, establishing Wade Wilson as one of Marvel’s most valuable properties. However, another fan-favourite actor previously revealed that he was considered for the Merc with a Mouth before Ryan Reynolds ultimately claimed the iconic red suit. Jensen Ackles, best known for his role in the long-running supernatural drama series, discussed his near-miss with one of cinema’s most successful comic book adaptations.
How Jensen Ackles’ unavailability led to Ryan Reynolds becoming ‘Deadpool’
Supernatural actor Jensen Ackles revealed that he was actively in the running for the role before Ryan Reynolds was cast. “There was definitely a movie that I was very much in talks about,” Jensen Ackles said while attending a ‘Supernatural’ event. “I wasn’t available, so the train just kind of stopped there. But, had I been available, I would’ve had to, you know, jump through the studio hoops and jump through the, you know, producer hoops and stuff.“
Jensen Ackles revealed he was once in contention for the role of Deadpool before Ryan Reynolds ultimately brought the iconic Marvel antihero to life.
Jensen Ackles confirmed that the film in question was ‘Deadpool’. Though it’s been speculated that his unavailability stemmed from his commitments to Supernatural, he did not specify the exact reason for his inability to pursue the role at that time.
Jensen Ackles reflects on avoiding awkwardness with co-star Morena Baccarin
Jensen Ackles acknowledged an additional complication that ultimately made his unavailability work out favourably. “It was probably a good thing because my ex-girlfriend was on there and so that probably would have been awkward, so it probably worked out for the best,” he said, referencing Morena Baccarin, who played Deadpool’s love interest Vanessa in the film.

Jensen Ackles expressed confidence in the outcome, acknowledging the talents of his former co-star. “I think that whole cast was amazing. I probably would’ve messed that up for a lot of people had I been a part of it, so probably best I didn’t. But that would’ve been cool,” he said. Jensen Ackles confirmed that ‘Deadpool’ is a movie he “really, really” likes, and he’s reminded of how much fun it could have been to play the character every time he watches the film.

More about ‘Deadpool’Ryan Reynolds built the Deadpool franchise on solo film success. Ryan Reynolds first donned the suit of the Marvel antihero in 2009’s ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’. That movie didn’t connect with people, but he was back in the famous red suit for the 2016 solo film, ‘Deadpool’.
