In a moment that captivated and concerned fans across social media, celebrated singer Sonu Nigam recently shared a video of himself singing the timeless classic “Suhani Raat Dhal Chuki” by the late legendary Mohammed Rafi, all while undergoing a surgical procedure. The unusual footage quickly went viral, prompting widespread speculation and well-wishes from his global fanbase.
Nigam has since stepped forward to clarify the circumstances surrounding the video, revealing he was undergoing surgery to address a recurring growth on his left ring finger. This marks the second time in four months that the acclaimed vocalist has had to undergo a procedure for the same issue.
Speaking to Hindustan Times, Nigam shed light on his persistent health concern. “It’s been happening for some time. I had a surgery four months back to remove it, but it has come back again. I think it’s got to do with some arthritis condition that I have in my bones, probably,” he explained. The recurrence has left the medical team and Nigam himself in a wait-and-watch phase regarding future treatment plans. “We have to wait and watch. It’s come out the second time,” he added, indicating the uncertainty surrounding the long-term solution.

Beyond the medical details, the most striking aspect of the viral video was Nigam’s impromptu performance. He recounted how this extraordinary moment unfolded organically within the operating room. “Singing in the OT just happened organically. Dr Nilesh Sathbhai is an admirer of mine and he was playing my songs during the surgery,” Nigam shared.
The soundtrack for his surgery consisted of tracks from his album “Rafi Resurrected,” a project where Nigam reimagined songs originally sung by Mohammed Rafi, accompanied by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. “As the surgery was happening, between some songs, there were a couple of songs that came without the voice. And as it came without the voice, the song was playing, but there was no voice. So, organically, I started singing,” Nigam vividly recalled, detailing the serendipitous origin of his operating table concert.

What began as a spontaneous reaction quickly transformed into an unforgettable experience for everyone present. The medical team, far from being distracted, thoroughly enjoyed the unexpected performance. “They really enjoyed it. And they actually said that this has never happened, that a patient is singing for the doctors while they do surgery. And I also enjoyed it because these are songs that are so close to my heart,” Nigam recounted with warmth.
He revealed that “Suhani Raat Dhal Chuki” was just one of several melodies he crooned for his medical attendants. “So I sang a couple of songs. This is just one song. I sang about two, three songs for them. So it became a very endearing moment,” he added, highlighting the unique bond formed during the procedure.
Recognizing the unprecedented nature of the event, Nigam himself suggested recording the performance, ensuring the doctors had a tangible memory of the unique occasion. “And I also asked them if they wanted to record it, they could record it as a memory. So they recorded it and then sent it to me. And that’s when we posted it,” he concluded, explaining how the private moment became a public sensation.
