As India concludes its crucial warm-up fixture against the Sri Lanka Cricket XI, insights into the team’s strategic approach for the upcoming Test series, particularly concerning its potent spin attack, have begun to emerge. Spin bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule has assuaged initial concerns regarding Kuldeep Yadav’s fitness, clarifying his absence from bowling in the second innings was a calculated precautionary measure.

Kuldeep, the left-arm wrist-spinner, had already delivered a substantial 18 overs during the three-day fixture, with an additional two to three overs bowled before the match. Bahutule explained, "Kuldeep bowled almost 20 overs in the sense 18 in the match and about two-three overs before the game also. He had a very good outing and he just wanted to take a break in terms of just understanding how his body is at." This strategic rest allowed the team to monitor his physical response to the workload, ensuring he remains in optimal condition for the challenging Test series.

With Kuldeep rested, India’s other spin options received valuable extended practice. Both Ravindra Jadeja and Manav Suthar bowled approximately 14-15 overs each, while Saransh Jain also capitalized on the opportunity to showcase his skills. This approach allowed the coaching staff to thoroughly assess their spin arsenal ahead of the first Test in Galle.

Bahutule expressed satisfaction with their outing, noting, "Manav bowled about 14-15 overs, Jaddu bowled about 14-15 overs. So, they got a very good outing, they understood how the pitch reacts and I think it was a great prep for them." The pitch, initially offering limited assistance to the slow bowlers, progressively became more conducive to spin as the game advanced. This provided India’s spinners a realistic understanding of the evolving conditions they are likely to encounter in the Test matches.

"The bowlers had a great opportunity to go down and express themselves on a pitch which was slightly on a flatter side in the first day. But as the days went by, there was more turn on to it and definitely a good outing for the spinners," Bahutule elaborated, highlighting the practical benefits of the warm-up.

Beyond spin, the warm-up served as a crucial acclimatization period for the entire squad. "Preparation is a very integral part of coming on any tour. The reason of us coming at this particular juncture is to make sure that we adapt to the conditions, understand how the pitches are," Bahutule stated. He emphasized the importance of this period for newer players like Manav Suthar and Saransh Jain, enabling them to fine-tune their lines, lengths, and field sets – critical elements for success in foreign conditions.

A significant positive for India was the swift recovery of captain Gill, who sustained a minor hand injury during a net session. Though initially rested from batting on the first day as a precaution, he returned to score valuable runs and participate in catching drills, with Bahutule confirming no lingering concerns. "It was just a precaution more than anything else. And he has been absolutely fine. He has been doing his training," he said.

Gill’s meticulous preparation for Sri Lanka’s spin attack also drew praise. "Shubman takes his preparation very seriously. And he is a very meticulous boy. And he understands that whatever is the demand for that particular series with the attack, which has been successful for the Sri Lankan team. His preparation is done accordingly," Bahutule revealed, adding that Gill has been simulating various scenarios in the nets with the coaching staff.

The warm-up also provided valuable time in the middle for India’s lower-order batters, with the team actively encouraging bowlers like Gurnoor Brar to enhance their batting contributions. "All the lower-order bowlers, who basically bat in lower order, their contribution will always be very useful to achieve a good total in the Test match," Bahutule affirmed.

Devdutt Padikkal further strengthened his case for a spot in the playing XI with a century in the first innings, though Bahutule indicated that the final decision will hinge on the specific conditions in Galle. "He expressed himself. He batted beautifully. And he is ready to, you know, whatever the decision, once we go to Galle, we will see the pitch."

With India currently holding the fifth position in the World Test Championship standings, this series carries immense significance. "WTC cycle is a very important cycle. And every series is important. So, our effort is that, back of the mind, we definitely want to go there and win. And be a part of the finals and win the WTC also," Bahutule emphasized.

The selection of the spin combination in Galle remains a key decision for India. Bahutule highlighted the unique strengths of each spinner – Ravindra Jadeja’s experience, Manav Suthar’s accuracy, Saransh Jain’s domestic success, and Kuldeep Yadav’s wrist-spin variety. "All four spinners have that uniqueness. We have got experience with Jaddu. We have got great accuracy levels with Manav Suthar. And, obviously, Saransh has got experience. He has performed really well in domestic cricket. And that is how he has earned his spot. And Kuldeep, being a wrist spinner, it always helps to have a wrist spinner in the side so that there is variety," he concluded.

As the team now shifts its focus to the opening Test in Galle, the conditions and the pitch will ultimately dictate the precise balance of India’s formidable spin attack.
