Positives for India following warm-up win in Sri Lanka | ICC World Test Championship

Devdutt Padikkal has significantly bolstered his claim for the crucial number three batting position in the Indian Test squad following a magnificent century during the warm-up fixture against Sri Lanka. The team arrived in the island nation facing uncertainty regarding the pivotal spot, especially with Sai Sudharsan, who had occupied the role for the past year, currently under a cloud of doubt due to a toe injury.

Padikkal, a left-handed batsman, alleviated much of India’s concern with a high-class performance in the first innings. He reached a brilliant century off just 121 balls before retiring at 103. Later in the day, he returned to the crease and continued his impressive form, ultimately concluding his innings with 142 runs from 164 deliveries. This commanding display has undeniably strengthened his case for inclusion ahead of the first Test, scheduled to commence on August 15th.

Commenting on Padikkal’s performance, team representative Bahutule stated, “Devdutt [Padikkal] got this opportunity. He expressed himself. He batted beautifully. And he is ready to, you know, whatever the decision, once we go to Galle, we will see the pitch. And whatever decision has to be taken, it will be.” Bahutule added, “But he has got those runs behind him. He has got the confidence behind him. Now, whether we take it, he gets into the 11 is something which we will decide only at Galle.” The final decision on the number three batsman is expected to be made upon the team’s arrival in Galle, after assessing the pitch conditions.
