CHENNAI, INDIA –
In a deeply moving interview, renowned actress Dushara Vijayan, currently promoting her film ‘GDN’, opened up about the profound impact her elder sister had on her life, particularly on her passion for dance. Dushara Vijayan Shares Deep Personal Loss and Enduring Inspiration
Speaking to SS Music during a promotional event for ‘GDN’, Dushara Vijayan shared intimate details about her sister, who was paralysed from the neck down due to myopathy. The actress became visibly emotional as she recounted their close bond and the enduring influence her sister had on her interests from a very young age.
“I miss her. Whenever I go out now, I don’t pray to God. I look at my sister’s photograph and pray,” Dushara revealed, highlighting the deep spiritual connection she maintains with her late sister.
Sister’s Undying Spirit Ignited Dushara’s Dance Passion
Dushara revealed that her initial interest in dance blossomed directly from her sister’s encouragement. Despite her own physical limitations, her sister fostered Dushara’s artistic exploration.
“Actually, the reason I developed an interest in dance from a young age was because of my sister. She couldn’t walk. Her condition was somewhat similar to Nagarjuna sir’s character in the film ‘Thozha’. In that movie, Nagarjuna’s character becomes paralysed after an accident. But my sister had been like that since birth,” Dushara explained, drawing a poignant parallel to a well-known cinematic portrayal of paralysis.
The actress elaborated that her sister’s paralysis affected her body from the neck down, necessitating assistance with daily activities. However, her intellect and spirit remained vibrant.
“There was nothing wrong with her from the neck up. Her body was paralysed from the neck down. So we had to help her with everything.”
A Bond Forged in Encouragement and Creativity
Dushara fondly recalled how her sister, from her wheelchair, would actively participate in her dance journey, offering suggestions and encouraging her creativity.
“But she would sit in her chair and tell me, ‘Play like this, dance like this,’ and things like that. Sometimes, everything would actually begin with her.”
This active involvement solidified their close relationship, with Dushara emphasizing, “I was extremely close to my sister.” She further clarified that she has two elder sisters, Leepika and Durga, and it was her second elder sister who passed away approximately a decade ago after living with myopathy.
A Glimpse into Dushara’s Family Life
During the same candid conversation, Dushara also touched upon her relationship with her younger brother. She shared that they resided together in Chennai for about seven years, a period during which she took on a maternal role.
“I lived in Chennai with my younger brother for around seven years. Technically, I am his mother. That’s how it is. He is actually like my child to me.”
Dushara Vijayan has garnered significant acclaim for her performances in films such as ‘Sarpatta Parambarai’, ‘Natchathiram Nagargiradhu’, ‘Raayan’, and ‘Vettaiyan’. Her latest biographical drama, ‘G.D.N.’, starring R Madhavan, was released in theatres on August 7, 2026. Fans can also anticipate her appearance in the action thriller ‘Magudam’, slated for a worldwide theatrical release on August 14, 2026.
