SpaceX and Tesla Unveil Plans for “Terafab Texas”: A Gigantic Leap in Semiconductor Manufacturing and AI Development
GRIMES, TEXAS – In a groundbreaking announcement that promises to reshape the landscape of advanced manufacturing and artificial intelligence, SpaceX, in collaboration with Elon Musk’s electric vehicle powerhouse Tesla, has revealed plans to construct “Terafab Texas,” an unprecedented semiconductor plant destined to become the largest building on Earth. Located outside of Houston in Grimes, Texas, this colossal facility is projected to exceed 100 million square feet, dwarfing current global architectural marvels.
Elon Musk, owner of both companies, took to X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday to share the news, stating, “Terafab Texas will be the largest and most valuable building on Earth by far. And it will be stunningly beautiful.” This ambitious undertaking signifies a pivotal moment in the domestic production of critical technological components, aiming to address the burgeoning demand for specialized chips.

In a press release issued Thursday, SpaceX detailed the plant’s multifaceted purpose: “This facility will house the manufacturing, packaging and testing of advanced logic and memory devices. Terafab will produce chips optimized for edge computing and inference for use in hardware like Tesla’s Optimus robots and self-driving Cybercabs, along with high-power chips designed for operating SpaceX’s space-based data centers.”
The strategic necessity for Terafab stems from a critical observation by both companies: their combined internal demand for specialized chips is on track to surpass the current global supply. “While we are deeply appreciative of our current chip suppliers and encourage them to expand production whenever possible, this looming gulf between supply and demand is at the core of Terafab’s necessity,” SpaceX explained. This proactive measure aims to secure a robust and independent supply chain for their rapidly expanding technological ecosystems.

The ambitious project is expected to create over 3,000 jobs, providing a significant boost to the local economy. The initial phase of Terafab Texas is estimated to cost approximately $16.8 billion, with potential investments escalating to $119 billion as outlined in a May filing.

Musk emphasized the broader implications of this venture: “The Terafab is bringing cutting-edge manufacturing to America, creating thousands of high-paying jobs in the Lone Star State and enabling us to produce AI chips at scale for use on Earth and in space.” This statement underscores the facility’s role in advancing not only terrestrial applications but also SpaceX’s ambitious space-based endeavors.
This latest development follows Tesla’s breaking ground in April on a research facility at the North Campus of its Giga Texas plant in Austin, which was described as a precursor to the Terafab project.
For context, the current largest building in the U.S. is The Pentagon, at 6.6 million square feet. Globally, China’s New Century Global Center in Chengdu holds the title at 18.9 million square feet. Terafab Texas, at over 100 million square feet, will dramatically surpass these benchmarks, signifying an unprecedented scale of industrial infrastructure.
