Following India’s impressive fifth-place finish at the World Cup in Amstelveen, where they defeated world No. 5 Germany 3-1, Punia took to social media to launch an impassioned plea for the survival of the Women’s Hockey India League (WHIL).

“Sir, our women just rewrote hockey history after 52 years. The league that built these players—the Women’s HIL—needs support to survive. A word from you could change its fate,” she wrote in her appeal to the Prime Minister.
Punia emphasized that the WHIL is not merely a tournament, but a critical pipeline for development. “The WHIL is that platform. It creates opportunities, develops talent, and builds the pipeline for future World Cup and Olympic stars,” she added, urging government leaders to ensure that young girls currently coming up through the ranks have a competitive stage to aspire to.
Leveraging Celebrity Influence
Recognizing the power of media visibility, the star goalkeeper also reached out to influential figures in the entertainment and business sectors. She appealed to Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, and Ananya Birla, suggesting that their support could catalyze the sponsorship and attention the league desperately needs.
Furthermore, Punia signaled out the Reliance Foundation and Nita Ambani, praising their track record in grassroots sports. “Women’s HIL is exactly the kind of grassroots-to-elite pipeline that needs a backer like this right now,” she stated.
