Known largely for his intense roles and action-driven filmography, Ajay Devgn has also built a strong presence in Hindi cinema’s comedy space. Over the years, he has blended deadpan humour with chaotic ensemble setups, often grounding multi-starrer entertainers with his understated timing.
Here’s a look at five of his most memorable comedy outings:
Golmaal Again (2017)
Directed by Rohit Shetty and produced under Rohit Shetty Pictures and Mangal Murti Films, Golmaal Again marked the fourth instalment of the popular Golmaal franchise. Devgn returned as the leader of a group of childhood friends who encounter a vengeful ghost. The ensemble cast featured Arshad Warsi, Tabu, Parineeti Chopra, Tusshar Kapoor, Kunal Khemu and Shreyas Talpade. Released during Diwali 2017, the film opened strongly with Rs 30 crore on day one and crossed Rs 200 crore in India within a month. Its worldwide collection stood at Rs 311.18 crore, making it one of the year’s biggest hits despite a mixed critical response.
Bol Bachchan (2012)

Also directed by Rohit Shetty, Bol Bachchan was produced by Ajay Devgn FFilms and Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision. Loosely inspired by Gol Maal by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the film cast Devgn as Prithviraj Raghuvanshi, a stern village strongman caught in a web of lies spun by Abhishek Bachchan’s character. The humour relies heavily on Devgn’s straight-faced reactions amid escalating confusion. Released in July 2012, it received mixed reviews but performed well commercially, earning Rs 165.68 crore worldwide.
Total Dhamaal (2019)

Directed by Indra Kumar, Total Dhamaal marked Devgn’s entry into the Dhamaal franchise. Produced by Ajay Devgn FFilms along with Ashok Thakeria, Indra Kumar and Anand Pandit, the film followed a group racing through a jungle to find hidden black money. Devgn played Guddu, a con artist navigating the chaos alongside a large ensemble including Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Riteish Deshmukh, Arshad Warsi and Jaaved Jaffrey. Despite criticism for its exaggerated slapstick, the film grossed Rs 228 crore worldwide against a budget of about Rs 90–100 crore.
Son of Sardaar (2012)

Directed by Ashwni Dhir and produced by Devgn under Ajay Devgn FFilms in association with Viacom 18 Motion Pictures and Eros International, Son of Sardaar featured him as Jassi, a Punjabi NRI caught in a family feud. The humour stems from a traditional code of hospitality that prevents his hosts from harming him. The film also starred Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha and Juhi Chawla. Released during Diwali 2012 alongside Jab Tak Hai Jaan, it collected Rs 161.48 crore worldwide and was declared a hit.
Ishq (1997)

One of Devgn’s earlier ventures into comedy, Ishq was directed by Indra Kumar and produced by Ashok Thakeria under Maruti International. The film paired him with Aamir Khan, Kajol and Juhi Chawla in a dual romance that cuts across class divides. Devgn played Ajay, a wealthy man in love with a woman from a modest background. The film earned Rs 30 crore, emerging as one of the highest-grossing films of 1997. Its broad, often farcical humour continues to find favour with audiences, aided by the chemistry between Devgn and Aamir Khan.
Together, these films highlight Devgn’s range beyond action and drama, showing his ability to anchor both subtle humour and full-blown comic chaos.
