Anthropic Directs Staff to Work Remotely Amid Confusion Over Potential Security Strike
AI powerhouse Anthropic recently instructed employees at its San Francisco headquarters to work from home due to concerns regarding a potential strike by the facility’s security personnel. However, the labor union representing those workers has refuted the claims, stating that no such action has been authorized or even planned.
According to sources familiar with the situation, the internal directive was issued early this week after Anthropic received a notification from its security staffing firm, Allied Universal. The staffing company warned that its employees might initiate a work stoppage, prompting Anthropic management to preemptively clear its offices on Monday and Tuesday to ensure employee safety.
When reached for comment, Allied Universal did not provide a response.
The Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which represents the security staff, expressed surprise at the sudden office closure. Representatives from the SEIU clarified that while they are currently engaged in protracted contract negotiations with Allied Universal and other regional security firms, they have not issued any strike threats or held a strike authorization vote for the current week.
The union has been in bargaining talks since April, advocating for improved workplace conditions, including higher wages, enhanced healthcare benefits, and more robust professional training for security staff across California.
Anthropic declined to comment on the nature of the stay-at-home mandate.
The incident highlights the growing emphasis on corporate security within the high-stakes artificial intelligence sector. As the industry faces increased scrutiny and public pressure, major players have been forced to harden their physical defenses. Reports from The Wall Street Journal have previously noted that both Anthropic and its competitor OpenAI have grappled with specific threats directed at their personnel, necessitating heightened caution.
For now, Anthropic continues to operate under a hybrid model that generally requires employees to be present in the office at least 25% of the time. The company remains in a period of intense transition; having filed a confidential S-1 draft in June, it is widely expected to pursue an initial public offering as early as August. Amid this preparation, secondary market investors have pushed the company’s valuation to an estimated $1.5 trillion, underscoring its pivotal role in the future of the technology sector.
