Apple Retail Stores Preparing for Major Overhaul Ahead of New Smart Home Product Launch

Apple is gearing up for a significant shift in its retail experience, with reports indicating that the company is currently reorganizing its brick-and-mortar locations to accommodate a new wave of home-focused hardware. According to the latest Power On newsletter from Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, Apple is initiating internal changes to prepare its physical storefronts for the debut of several long-rumored smart home devices.

Revamping the “Avenues”

The retail adjustments are primarily focused on the “Avenues”—the signature perimeter wall displays found in Apple’s modern store designs. These areas typically showcase accessories such as the HomePod, Apple TV, AirPods, and Beats, alongside select third-party items.

Sources suggest that Apple retail teams are currently rearranging these sections and installing new accessory bays specifically designed to highlight upcoming devices. This move underscores the necessity of providing a hands-on experience, as Apple looks to demonstrate to customers how its new ecosystem of home products functions within a modern, connected household.

The Looming Launch of the “Home Hub”

While Apple is expected to refresh existing products—including a new Apple TV equipped with an A17 Pro chip and a revamped HomePod mini featuring an S9-series processor and a new red finish—the scale of these retail changes suggests a much larger ambition.

The primary catalyst for the store redesign is the highly anticipated smart home hub, internally referred to as the “HomePad.” Expected to arrive between October and early 2027, the device is rumored to feature a 7-inch square display and will be available with either a tabletop base or a wall mount.

Recent code discoveries in macOS Tahoe 26.7 reveal that the device will likely run a specialized version of tvOS, featuring a highly customizable home screen. The interface will reportedly incorporate a Widget Gallery, allowing users to arrange icons, clock faces, and widgets—with the system intelligently suggesting widgets from a linked iPhone to streamline the setup process.

Why the Retail Shake-Up Matters

Because the new hub represents a new category for Apple, the company recognizes that it cannot rely solely on online marketing. By carving out dedicated physical space, Apple intends to clarify the device’s purpose, demonstrating how it serves as a central command center for home automation and Siri-powered AI interactions.

As Apple prepares to move beyond the smartphone as its primary pillar of growth, these Apple stores are set to become critical showrooms for the future of the smart home, proving that even as retail evolves, the ability to physically interact with new technology remains a core component of Apple’s strategy.
