Google Maps Adds Hindi Support And Real Time Transit Updates To Ask Maps
Google is rolling out a set of updates to Ask Maps in India, the Gemini powered feature within Google Maps that lets users ask natural questions about places instead of just searching for them. The update brings Hindi language support, personalised recommendations, conversation memory and live transit information to the tool.
Ask Maps now understands Hindi
Starting now, Ask Maps supports Hindi, allowing the tool to understand queries and respond naturally in the language. This should make it easier for users to discover places, plan routes and get local recommendations without switching to English first.
Personalised suggestions using Gmail
A new Personal Intelligence feature lets users securely connect Ask Maps to Gmail, with support for Calendar planned soon. Once connected, Ask Maps can factor in details like an upcoming flight or a dinner reservation to give relevant suggestions without the user having to type out their plans. For instance, a traveller could ask what to do near their hotel before a flight the next day, and Ask Maps would pull the relevant hotel booking from Gmail and even suggest what time to leave for the airport. Google says this connection is off by default and only activates if a user chooses to turn it on.
Ask Maps remembers past conversations
For users with history settings turned on, Ask Maps can now recall earlier conversations. Someone planning a trip to a particular city, for example, could ask Maps to remind them what it had suggested earlier, and it would pull up those past recommendations instead of making the user start over.
Real time information and live transit updates
Ask Maps also now surfaces real time details such as expected traffic on a commute, current weather conditions, and how busy a shop or restaurant is before heading out. A new transit widget adds live departure times for buses, metro and inter city buses at a given stop, along with route updates and connecting options. If a bus or train runs late, the estimated wait adjusts in real time.
Ask Maps originally launched in India and the United States as part of a broader overhaul of Google Maps that combines Gemini’s language capabilities with Maps data.
