Bowlers Dominate as 18 Wickets Fall on Chaotic Day 1 of Second Test

In a breathtaking display of fast bowling that left spectators spellbound, Mitchell Starc and Shoriful Islam combined for a record-breaking performance on Saturday. A total of 18 wickets tumbled during a chaotic opening day of the second Test between Australia and Bangladesh, as the seamers exploited a lively pitch to dictate terms from start to finish.

Starc’s Dream Start

Australian captain Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to bowl, sensing early assistance from the surface. His decision was validated immediately by Mitchell Starc, who etched his name into the record books by dismissing Shadman Islam with the very first ball of the match. This marked the fourth time in Starc’s illustrious career that he has claimed a wicket with the opening delivery of a Test.

The carnage continued as Starc tore through the Bangladeshi top order, removing Tanzid Hasan and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto in quick succession. By the time the players headed for lunch, Starc had claimed five wickets, eventually finishing with a devastating 6-12 from 10 overs. Backed by three wickets from Cummins, the tourists were dismantled for a meager 64 runs—their lowest total batting first in Australia since 1932.

Reflecting on his scintillating form while walking off the field, Starc admitted to his wife, former Australian captain Alyssa Healy, that he channeled a bit of "anger" into his opening spell, adding, “Six wickets in the first session—you can’t beat that.”

Shoriful Responds in Style

While the first half of the day belonged to the hosts, the narrative shifted dramatically in the afternoon. Bangladesh’s Shoriful Islam, returning to the side after recovering from a side strain that sidelined him for the series opener, produced a masterclass of his own.

As the pitch continued to challenge the batters, Shoriful found his rhythm and precision, paralyzing the Australian lineup. He dismantled the home team’s middle and lower order to finish with impressive figures of 6-35. His efforts ensured that the Australians were brought back down to earth, preventing them from running away with the game.

Stumps and Situation

By the close of play, Australia had reached 165-8, holding a lead of 101 runs. All-rounder Cameron Green provided much-needed stability for the hosts, remaining unbeaten on 51, while Nathan Lyon held firm alongside him on 10 not out.

With such heavy traffic in the scorecard on the first day, the second Test is shaping up to be a truncated, high-tension affair where every run will be at a premium. With two days of batting remaining, both sides will be looking to capitalize on their bowlers’ momentum to seize control of the series.
