Litter from Gorleston Clifftop Festival was collected by two volunteers from Norfolk Beach Cleans on Monday, August 3, after a firework display from the night before.Â
Emma Sturman, 37, founded Norfolk Beach Cleans in January 2021.
The group was created to encourage the local community to get involved in looking after the environment with litter picking activities, predominantly on the beach.
Ms Sturman said: “I didn’t post the picture to bash the organisers, but I wanted to highlight how much these displays cause litter.
“I’ve been doing this for five years now, and there’s always a lot of debris from these events, mainly on bonfire night.
“I’m not a fan of fireworks generally as they scare animals.
“Thankfully, the majority of materials in fireworks are biodegradable, but the tips are plastic, which is not good for the environment.”
The volunteers said they wanted to raise awareness about the environmental impact of public firework displays.
They noted that this year, the wind blew debris onto the beach rather than into the sea, though the dry conditions still posed a fire risk.
Organisers at the Gorleston Clifftop Festival have been contacted for comment.
