'Better to stay home': Neymar hits back at Santos fans after being booed in Copa Sudamericana win

Brazilian football icon Neymar openly expressed his frustration with a segment of the Santos fanbase following their 2-1 victory over Macara in the first leg of their Copa Sudamericana round-of-16 tie. Despite being instrumental in the team’s comeback with two crucial assists, Neymar was visibly displeased with the negative reception from some supporters, urging them to offer unwavering backing to the team rather than resorting to criticism during live play.

Speaking to ESPN after the match, Neymar articulated his belief that fans should be a source of encouragement, particularly during challenging moments. He reflected on the initial 1-0 deficit, acknowledging the long-standing suffering of the fanbase, but asserted that a consistently negative mindset brought to the stadium serves no constructive purpose. He explicitly stated, “if you’re going to keep thinking about that and come to the stadium with a negative mindset, it’s better to stay home.” Neymar recounted an exchange with a critical fan, emphasizing the importance of support when there was still ample time left in the game. He then highlighted the irony of the same fan showing affection once the team turned the tide, remarking, “It’s easy to be a Santos fan like that… Only liking the guy when he’s winning.”

The match itself saw Santos endure a difficult start at Vila Belmiro, conceding a goal just four minutes in when Franco Posse put Macara ahead. This early setback forced the hosts into an immediate uphill battle. However, as the game progressed, Santos found their rhythm, with Neymar increasingly influencing the proceedings. His decisive contributions were pivotal in the team’s recovery. He first provided the assist for Gabriel Barbosa, who successfully leveled the score before halftime. Neymar then delivered another key moment in the 75th minute, whipping in a dangerous corner that Willian Arao skillfully headed home, completing Santos’ impressive turnaround.

These two assists underscore Neymar’s continued importance to the Brazilian club. The veteran forward’s performance against Macara extended his impressive recent run of form, highlighting his consistent impact on the team. He has now directly contributed to 21 goals in his last 24 appearances for Santos, accumulating 13 goals and eight assists during that period. His latest display further solidified his crucial role for Santos as they strive for advancement in the continental competition.

With a narrow 2-1 advantage, Santos will now travel to Ambato, Ecuador, for the second leg of the tie. To secure their place in the Copa Sudamericana quarter-finals, the Brazilian side will need to avoid defeat. Macara, on the other hand, will be looking to capitalize on their home advantage as they aim to overturn the deficit and continue their own journey in the tournament.
