Beyond the Vanity: The States Leading America’s Clean Beauty Revolution

New Data Reveals America’s Growing Appetite for Ethical Beauty: California and New York Lead the Charge

A surge in consumer consciousness is reshaping the American skincare market, as new data from Eight Saints Skincare highlights a significant nationwide shift toward cruelty-free, vegan, and sustainable beauty products. By analyzing Google Keyword Planner search volume across all 50 states, the study offers a definitive look at where ethical beauty is trending most intensely.

The research utilized 25 specific search terms related to ethical and sustainable skincare practices. To ensure a fair comparison between states with vast population disparities, the researchers normalized the data by calculating the search rate per 100,000 residents. The resulting rankings reveal that interest in “conscious beauty” is not merely a coastal trend but a rapidly expanding priority for shoppers from the Pacific Northwest to the Atlantic seaboard.

California officially claimed the top spot as the nation’s leader in ethical beauty interest, followed closely by New York in second place. Rounding out the top five were Washington, Colorado, and Massachusetts. The full top ten list also includes Connecticut, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Oregon, and Virginia.

Beyond search volume, the study analyzed the availability of sustainable beauty products across different regions. California dominated this metric as well, with 50 unique sustainable product offerings, followed by New York with 40, and Texas with 30. Other states, including Virginia, Illinois, Florida, and Pennsylvania, maintained a steady presence with 20 offerings, while many other states hovered around 10.

Jessica Maxcy, Brand Manager at Eight Saints Skincare, suggests that this data reflects a profound change in the modern consumer’s mindset. “Beauty shoppers have access to more information than ever before,” Maxcy noted. “For many people, choosing a product is no longer just about what it promises to do—they also want to know what is in it, where ingredients come from, and whether animals were involved in testing.”

However, industry experts caution against reading too much into states with lower search rankings. Maxcy emphasized that a lower search rate does not necessarily equate to a lack of concern for animal welfare or environmental sustainability.

“Search behavior can be influenced by everything from product availability and brand awareness to the terminology consumers use,” Maxcy added. “What the ranking does show is that interest in ethical beauty varies considerably around the country, and the landscape is shifting as consumers increasingly demand transparency.”

As major retailers and boutique brands alike race to meet this demand, the data underscores a broader cultural trajectory: ethical standards are becoming as essential to a brand’s success as the efficacy of the products themselves. For consumers and manufacturers alike, the message is clear—the future of the beauty industry is increasingly defined by compassion and sustainability.
