Big blow for India as Jemimah Rodrigues' injury rules her out of Asia Cup and Asian Games

The Indian women’s cricket team has been dealt a significant setback with the news that star batter Jemimah Rodrigues will miss both the upcoming Women’s Asia Cup and the Asian Games. Rodrigues sustained a high-grade right hamstring tear while competing for Southern Brave in The Hundred in England on August 3rd. Following this unfortunate incident, she underwent a comprehensive assessment by the BCCI Medical Team at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, which unequivocally confirmed the severity and extent of her injury. This untimely injury effectively sidelines her from two crucial international tournaments for India.

In response to Rodrigues’s unavailability, the national selectors have named Pratika Rawal as her replacement in the Indian squad for the Asia Cup. Rawal, who has previously represented India in One Day Internationals (ODIs) only, makes a welcome return to the national setup. Her inclusion comes after she was forced to miss the recent Test series against England due to a knee injury she sustained while fielding for India A, an incident that required stitches. Her return will hopefully provide some much-needed strength to the squad.

The Women’s Asia Cup is scheduled to commence on August 28th in the UAE, with the final slated for September 13th. India has been placed in Group A alongside formidable opponents such as Pakistan, Thailand, and Hong Kong. A highly anticipated clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan is scheduled for September 5th in Dubai, promising to be a thrilling encounter. The format dictates that the top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals, intensifying the competition from the outset.

Beyond the Asia Cup, Rodrigues’s hamstring injury also precludes her participation in the Asian Games, where women’s cricket will be played in the T20 format from September 17th to October 3rd in Nagoya. India, being the top-seeded team in the women’s competition, is set to begin their campaign directly in the quarter-finals against Japan. A potential semi-final fixture could see them face either Bangladesh or Hong Kong, China, depending on results. The tournament structure ensures that India and Pakistan, placed in opposite halves of the draw, can only meet in either the coveted gold-medal match or the bronze-medal play-off, both of which are scheduled for September 22nd. This unfortunate injury to Rodrigues certainly impacts India’s strategy for these significant sporting events.

The updated Indian Women’s Asia Cup squad now comprises Harmanpreet Kaur (Captain), Smriti Mandhana (Vice-Captain), Shafali Verma, Bharti Fulmali, Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh (Wicketkeeper), G. Kamalini (Wicketkeeper), Arundhati Reddy, Prema Rawat, Radha Yadav, Sree Charani, Renuka Thakur, Nandni Sharma, Kranti Gaud, and Pratika Rawal.
