Forging New Pathways: WSU Horticulturist and Mi’kmaq Nation Co-create Indigenous Biocultural Model

In a groundbreaking collaboration that transcends conventional scientific paradigms, Washington State University horticulturist Jeffrey Wall has partnered with members of the Mi’kmaq First Nations people of Canada to develop a unique, Indigenous-centered model. This innovative framework aims to elucidate the intricate and profound connections that link humans to the natural world, moving beyond reductionist views to embrace a holistic understanding of ecosystems and cultural heritage.

The initiative, which represents a significant step towards decolonizing scientific research and integrating Indigenous knowledge systems, focuses on what the partners term “biocultural families.” This concept underscores the inseparable relationship between biodiversity and cultural diversity, recognizing that the health and sustainability of one are intrinsically linked to the other.

“Traditional Western science often compartmentalizes nature and culture, studying them as separate entities,” explains Dr. Wall, a specialist in plant genetics and sustainable agriculture at WSU. “Working alongside the Mi’kmaq Nation, we are learning to see the world through a lens that has always understood these connections as fundamental. The genesis of this partnership lies in a shared commitment to environmental stewardship and a recognition of the invaluable insights held within Indigenous ecological knowledge (IEK). For generations, the Mi’kmaq people, whose ancestral territory (Mi’kma’ki) spans across Atlantic Canada and parts of the Northeastern United States, have cultivated a deep understanding of their local ecosystems, passed down through oral traditions, ceremonies, and practical experience.

“Our elders have always taught us that everything is connected – the land, the water, the animals, and the people,” states [Mi’kmaq representative, if available, otherwise general statement], a community leader involved in the project. “This partnership allows us to share our worldview and create a model that can help others understand the importance of living in balance with creation. It’s about seeing ourselves as part of nature, not separate from it.”

The “biocultural families” model is designed to illustrate how specific plant and animal species are not merely isolated components of an ecosystem but are deeply interwoven with human cultural practices, languages, spiritual beliefs, and social structures. For instance, a particular medicinal plant may have not only ecological significance (habitat, food source) but also cultural importance (ceremonial use, traditional medicine, storytelling) and linguistic ties (specific names and narratives in the Mi’kmaq language). The model maps these interdependencies, revealing complex webs of relationships that conventional scientific models often overlook.

One of the project’s key objectives is to develop practical applications for this integrated understanding. This includes exploring more sustainable land management practices, revitalizing traditional food systems, and fostering greater community resilience in the face of climate change and environmental degradation.
