Boardmasters launches new ‘Breaking’ competition to showcase emerging South West artists

Applications have opened for Boardmasters Breaking, a new competition aimed at giving emerging South West musicians and performers the opportunity to appear on the Main Stage at this year’s Boardmasters Festival.

The annual surf and music festival, which takes place from 5th to 9th August 2026 across Watergate Bay and Fistral Beach, is inviting applications from vocalists, bands, DJs and artists of any genre or age who are from, or based in, the South West.

Founded in 1981 as a surfing competition, Boardmasters has grown into one of the UK’s biggest coastal festivals, combining live music with international surf contests, wellness activities, creative programming and community events set against the Cornish coastline.

Festival organisers say the new initiative has been designed to spotlight regional talent and offer performers a platform at one of Cornwall’s most significant cultural events.

The winning act will secure an opening slot on the festival’s Main Stage on Sunday 9th August, alongside full weekend festival access for performers and a guest, access to the Artist Area on the day of the performance, professionally filmed content and promotional support through Boardmasters and BBC Introducing.

The winner will also receive a dedicated feature on CLUNK Magazine’s Instagram channels, as well as promotion across Boardmasters’ own social media platforms.

Applications will be reviewed and shortlisted by the Boardmasters team before a final winner is selected by BBC Introducing. The successful artist will be announced on Monday 25th May.

This year’s Boardmasters line-up includes performances from Lily Allen, Fatboy Slim, Kasabian, The Kooks, Loyle Carner, Rudimental, REN, Tash Sultana, Joy Crookes, Jacob Alon and Lambrini Girls.

Alongside the music programme, the festival will also host World Surf League competitions, wellness sessions and a wide-ranging arts and community programme.
