The Dornoch Highland Games are understood to have been called off just two weeks before they were due to take place.
The cancellation has been confirmed by Chris Murray who was due to be chieftain at this year’s Games on August 7.
Mr Murray, who is originally from Dornoch but now lives in Stornoway, said that he had been contacted by the organisers late last night (Wednesday, July 22), and informed that the Games were not going ahead.
He said: “I am terribly disappointed that the Gathering has had to be cancelled at such short notice but I cannot comment further at this stage.”
The Northern Times has tried to contact Gathering president Jimmy Macdonald and others involved in the Games without success. The reason for the cancellation has not as yet been made public.
A hugely popular event in the town’s calendar, the Gathering attracts visitors from across the UK and overseas.
While the event’s social media page is down, its website is still operational.
Sutherland councillor Michael Baird is one of two regional representatives of the Royal Scottish Highland Games Association (RSHGA).
He said: “I am very saddened to hear that there will be no Dornoch Highland Gathering this year.”
More to come on this story.
