Canford Heath Inferno: Fire Service Issues Urgent Statement as Massive Blaze Tears Through Nature Reserve

Emergency services have launched a major operation this evening as a significant fire broke out at the Canford Heath nature reserve.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were alerted to the blaze at 7:39 pm today. Firefighters are currently working to contain flames that have engulfed an area of the heathland measuring approximately 100m by 100m.

The response to the incident has been substantial, reflecting the severity of the fire and the potential risk to the protected landscape. A total of 14 firefighting appliances have been dispatched to the scene to combat the flames.

Crews from a wide range of stations across the region are in attendance, including multiple units from Poole (three) and Christchurch (two). Support has also been provided by fire crews from Ferndown, Wareham, Wimborne, Hamworthy, Swanage, Blandford, and Verwood. Additionally, teams from Burley and Ringwood, representing Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIOWFRS), have been drafted in to assist, alongside a dedicated support vehicle from Gillingham.

Fire officials described a scene of intense activity as crews work to prevent the fire from spreading further across the heath. The nature reserve, known for its delicate ecosystem and dry vegetation, is particularly vulnerable to fire during periods of warm or dry weather.

While the cause of the fire has not yet been established, the scale of the deployment indicates the emergency services’ commitment to preventing significant ecological damage to the reserve. Residents in the surrounding areas are being advised to remain vigilant and to keep windows and doors closed if they are downwind of the smoke.

Authorities have not yet provided an estimated timeline for when the blaze will be fully extinguished or under control, but fire crews remain on-site in full force. Further updates are expected as the situation develops throughout the night.
