‘Mirzapur: The Movie’ Cleared for Theatrical Release: High-Octane Grit Retained with Minor Edits

The highly anticipated cinematic transition of the cult-favorite streaming phenomenon, Mirzapur, is officially ready for the big screen. Mirzapur: The Movie has secured its ‘A’ certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) just days ahead of its scheduled theatrical release on September 4, 2026.

Clocking in at an epic 3 hours, 17 minutes, and 19 seconds, the film promises to deliver the same raw, uncompromising storytelling that turned the franchise into a national sensation.

Navigating the Certification Process

The road to the cinema required minor regulatory adjustments. According to official reports, the CBFC requested modifications to several dialogues, including the replacement of six abusive terms and the muting of expletives at four distinct points. Additionally, specific linguistic tweaks were mandated, including the substitution of certain words to ensure compliance with board standards, alongside the adjustment of a reference regarding caste.

Regarding intimacy, the board requested that two sequences—one occurring before the interval and one in the second half—be toned down by 50 percent through both visual and auditory edits. This resulted in approximately 35 seconds of footage being adjusted. Notably, the board refrained from demanding any cuts to the film’s signature violent or graphic sequences, preserving the dark, gritty aesthetic that defines the world of Kaleen Bhaiya and Guddu Pandit.

Producers Maintain “Unfiltered Essence”

While the certification documents suggest specific modifications, sources close to the production have downplayed the impact of these changes. Insiders insist that the film was cleared with “hardly any modifications” and that the final cut remains true to the directors’ original vision.

“This means audiences will get to experience the much-awaited theatrical adaptation exactly the way the makers intended it to be seen, retaining its raw, unfiltered essence on the big screen,” the source stated.

A Powerhouse Production

The film is helmed by director Gurmmeet Singh and penned by writer Puneet Krishna. Produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under the banner of Excel Entertainment—with Kassim Jagmagia and Vishal Ramchandani serving as co-producers—the movie boasts an expansive ensemble cast. Fans can look forward to seeing their favorite stars back in action, including Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyenndu, Rasika Dugal, Shweta Tripathi, and many others, in what is being hailed as one of the most significant theatrical adaptations of recent years.

As the release date approaches, anticipation continues to build for the return of the power struggles in the heartland of Uttar Pradesh. Mirzapur: The Movie hits theatres on September 4, 2026.
