Chrissy Metz from ‘This Is Us’ recently opened up about how she is taking weight loss medication and how happy she has been with the results. The star admitted that while she had been a skeptic for years, the medication has, in fact, helped her a lot. (Instagram)

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Metz shared her personal motivation, stating, “I just wanted to take care of myself.” The actress disclosed that a history of health issues, including obesity, runs in her family, leading her to consider GLP-1 as a proactive measure at this juncture in her life. “I’m not getting any younger," she remarked, highlighting the urgency she felt in addressing her well-being.

Metz confessed to previously exploring numerous avenues for health improvement. “I felt like I’ve tried so many modalities, whether it was diets or therapy, and none of it really worked for me,” she explained. Her initial trepidation towards medication was palpable. “It’s been great! I’ve enjoyed the benefits that I didn’t think would come with it, because I was very skeptical. I was like, ‘I’m not taking this medication. I don’t want to do this. It’s not going to work for me.’ You know, all the things.”

A significant revelation for Metz was the concept of "food noise." She admitted, "But when I realized food noise was really a thing that consumed a lot of my headspace, I was like, ‘Oh.’" This persistent internal dialogue around food had long dictated her relationship with eating. “I just vilified food for so long because I was taught that it was bad, and you shouldn’t eat this or that,” she elaborated.

Beyond mitigating cravings, the medication has provided Metz with unexpected advantages. “And it’s been helping me be more mobile and have less joint pain and inflammation and run around onstage [Metz is currently in Broadway’s & Juliet] and just do things that would have been much more difficult several pounds and inches ago," she noted, underscoring the tangible impact on her physical capabilities and performance.

Metz’s decision to embrace GLP-1 stems from a newfound commitment to self-prioritization. “My thinking was, how can I better myself and put myself first, which has always been the bane of my existence because I’m a people pleaser?” she articulated. The results have been swift and positive. “But I know that my blood work is already better, and I’m headed in the right direction of getting ahead of things that needed getting ahead of.”

Chrissy Metz Unfazed by Scrutiny Over GLP-1 Use

Addressing the inevitable public discourse surrounding her decision, Metz remains resolute. “Listen, when it comes to me, everybody is judgy. It doesn’t matter what I do. Before, people were like ‘Why isn’t she on a GLP-1?’ and now they’re going to know I’m on it and be like, ‘Why is she on a GLP-1?’” she stated with a touch of humor.

Metz emphasized the importance of personal autonomy in health choices, rejecting external judgment. “My life is my life, and I have to do what’s best for me, and that includes not listening to the comments and just talking to people who are positive and kind. I can’t engage with something that doesn’t make me feel good.” She highlighted that critics often lack understanding of her personal health history and hereditary factors.

Her journey extends beyond medication, encompassing a holistic approach to wellness. Metz is actively collaborating with a professional trainer, fostering body positivity, and continually exploring her physical capabilities. By openly sharing her experience, Chrissy Metz not only sheds light on the evolving landscape of weight management but also challenges societal norms and encourages individuals to prioritize their health free from unwarranted judgment.
