Cirencester Man Admits Attempted Murder Following Brutal Stabbing

A 34-year-old man from Cirencester has pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of a local man following a violent stabbing incident that left the community in shock last year.

George Price, of Middle Mead, appeared at Gloucester Crown Court on Thursday, October 22, where he admitted to the attempted murder of Thomas Ody. The attack occurred in Cirencester between May 22 and May 25, 2023.

The investigation into the incident began in the early hours of May 24, when emergency services discovered a man in his 20s suffering from multiple stab wounds in Matthews Walk. The victim was treated at the scene before being rushed to Southmead Hospital in Bristol with serious, life-threatening injuries.

Following the discovery, police launched a significant investigation, cordoning off large sections of a footpath near Bishop Mews and the Kingsmeadow roundabout as forensics teams combed the area for evidence.

During the same court hearing, Price also entered a guilty plea to a charge of arson relating to an incident at the Golden Farm pub in Upper Churnside, which also took place on May 24 last year.

However, Price denied several other charges, including wounding Mr. Ody with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He further pleaded not guilty to possessing a lock knife and a charge of causing racially or religiously-aggravated intentional harassment, alarm, or distress against another individual, Ray Warmington.

Attempted murder is a grave offense that carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. Legal guidelines for the charge indicate an offense range spanning from three to 40 years in custody, depending on the severity and circumstances of the case.

Price has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to reappear at Gloucester Crown Court on January 28 for further proceedings. The community, which was deeply unsettled by the violence seen during those few days in May, continues to await the conclusion of the legal process.
