A Connecticut mother is speaking out after receiving a life-changing act of kindness from one of the world’s biggest stars. Ashley Taunton, a mother of three who sustained severe injuries while attempting to save others during a roadside accident in Rhode Island, has expressed her profound gratitude after discovering that Taylor Swift donated $50,000 to her recovery fund.

A Heroic Act Turns Into a Personal Tragedy

The incident occurred recently in Rhode Island, where Taunton—a certified nurse—was traveling with her daughter. Upon witnessing a group of teenagers lose control of their vehicle on a rain-slicked road, Taunton immediately jumped into action.

While she was working to assist the stranded teens, a second vehicle lost control, heading directly toward the group. In a split-second act of heroism, Taunton pushed the nearest teenager out of the path of the oncoming car, only to be struck herself.

“It just felt like a big explosion,” Taunton recalled of the harrowing moment. “I just remember being on the ground, and I could see my ankle was hanging there. I went to try to get up, and I couldn’t breathe.”

Taunton was rushed to Rhode Island International Hospital with life-threatening injuries. To help offset the mounting medical bills, her friend, Laura Ortelt, launched a GoFundMe page, which has since surpassed $90,000 in total donations.

The Taunton family was stunned when they received notice of a massive contribution from the pop icon. At the time the donation came through, Taunton was heading to a physical therapy session.

“My husband said, ‘No way. Supposedly Taylor Swift just donated $50,000 to the GoFundMe,’” Taunton told PEOPLE. “My stomach flipped, and I got tears in my eyes but [I] also was in disbelief. My physical therapist was shocked, and my husband had to walk outside and gather himself.”

The family initially questioned if the donation was legitimate, but they were later contacted by the fundraising platform to confirm that the contribution had indeed come from the “Love Story” singer.

Focusing on Healing

For Taunton and her family, the donation is more than just money—it is a weight lifted off their shoulders. The funds will allow her husband to focus on her recovery and care for their children and animals, rather than worrying about immediate financial instability.

“I am in awe of how God works and how so many can be the hands and feet of Christ to bring triumph from tragedy,” Taunton shared. “It has been an overwhelming blessing, and we are so grateful. I still don’t even know how to articulate how thankful we are, and I wish I could hug Taylor and everyone who has blessed us.”
