Ratko Mladić Appeals Life Sentence as International Court Finalizes Legacy of Bosnian War

Seven years after being sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in the atrocities of the Bosnian War, the legal proceedings surrounding the “Butcher of Bosnia,” Ratko Mladić, continue to echo through the halls of international justice.

Mladić, the former Bosnian Serb military commander, was convicted in 2017 for his central role in one of the darkest chapters of post-World War II European history. The presiding tribunal found him guilty of orchestration of the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, where more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were systematically executed, as well as the protracted siege of Sarajevo, which resulted in the deaths of over 10,000 civilians.
