Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez is attracting attention from Arsenal, PSG, and Barcelona, as confirmed by manager Diego Simeone.
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has acknowledged Arsenal’s interest in forward Julian Alvarez, with Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona also keen on securing his services. The announcement came ahead of a significant encounter between the two teams in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid.
Simeone commented on the mounting speculation, stating, “I’m not inside Julian Alvarez’s head. It’s normal that an extraordinary player like Julian Alvarez is wanted by Arsenal, PSG, and Barcelona because he’s very good.”
Alvarez has become a prominent player for Atletico since joining from Manchester City for £82 million, where he enjoyed a successful spell and contributed to consecutive Premier League title wins. During his time with Atletico Madrid, he has scored 48 goals in 104 appearances. The 26-year-old also played a key role in Argentina’s World Cup victory in 2022.
Despite some injury concerns sidelining him from Atletico’s last two fixtures, Alvarez is expected to return to the squad for the match against Arsenal, who have made significant changes to their own attacking line-up this season. The Gunners notably signed Viktor Gyokeres, who has emerged as their top scorer, netting 18 goals this term.
Arsenal’s sporting director, Andrea Berta, is familiar with Alvarez, having been instrumental in the forward’s transfer from Manchester City. Looking ahead, Emery’s side is rumoured to be active in the upcoming summer transfer window, as they seek to enhance their squad further.
Atletico Madrid, however, are determined to retain Alvarez, valuing him at approximately £130 million. The club’s stance is firm: they do not wish to part with the striker, even if he expresses a desire to leave. Alvarez looks to focus on achieving success with Atletico in the UEFA Champions League and potentially repeating his World Cup success with the national team.
In a separate development, Alvarez addressed claims of a possible move to Barcelona, labelling them a “snowball of lies”. He expressed irritation over the persistent speculation regarding his future amid fears that it would distract him from his current commitments. His agent, Fernando Hidalgo, has also rebutted suggestions that Alvarez’s family is seeking accommodation in Catalonia, providing further clarification on the player’s situation.
The Champions League remains a primary objective for both Arsenal and Atletico Madrid. Atletico captain Koke has conveyed his enthusiasm for the high-stakes match, capturing the spirit of the occasion by comparing the anticipation to a first date. He stated, “We expect a very strong Arsenal side. This is a Champions League semi-final and that is how we approach it.”
Heading into this crucial tie, Atletico is keen to assert its ambition for a first Champions League title, amidst a strong squad led by Simeone. Their past encounter with Arsenal earlier in the season, where they lost 4-0 at the Emirates Stadium, serves as a motivation to improve and deliver better results in the semi-final stage.
