National Award-winning actor Pavan Malhotra has stated that actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh was noticed by the Hindi film industry due to the 2014 Punjabi film âPunjab 1984â, in which they both appeared. Malhotra reflected on the significance of the film, directed by Anurag Singh, during a conversation with ANI. The movie, set during the 1984 Punjab insurgency, also featured Kirron Kher.
Malhotra said, âI did my first Punjabi film with Punjab 1984. Diljit Dosanjh was noticed by the Hindi film industry because of that film. Before that, when I said I was going to make a Punjabi film, someone made fun of me. Diljit had a film called Jatt & Juliet, and they said, âSo, youâre doing Jatt & Julietâ?â
He described âPunjab 1984â as having a unique âmagic of its ownâ and called it one of Anurag Singhâs finest works. âThe director of Punjab 1984 made one of his best films with it. He is the same director who also made Border 2. After that, I made another film with him, Super Singh. But Punjab 1984 had a magic of its own,â he said.
Before agreeing to participate in the film, Malhotra wanted to understand its story and presentation of sensitive events. He praised the director for handling the subject with great balance. âOnce the film was made: or rather, before I agreed to be a part of it: I told him just one thing: âTell me the story. I need to know which way it leans. Otherwise, I donât want to be associated with it.â But he handled the balance so beautifully, so thoughtfully,â Malhotra explained.
He also commented on the filmâs lasting impression, both for its narrative and the performances. He praised Diljitâs acting and Kirron Kherâs performance. âIâm really happy to have been part of it. He expressed a great deal in his own distinctive way. And Diljit was outstanding. I genuinely think heâs one of the finest actors we have. His speech, his expressions⌠everything. Kirron Kher was brilliant too,â he said.
Released in 2014, âPunjab 1984â was critically acclaimed for depicting the human impact of militancy in Punjab and remains a significant film in Punjabi cinema. Diljit Dosanjh made his Bollywood debut with âUdta Punjabâ in 2016, earning widespread acclaim and the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. Since then, he has built a successful career in Punjabi cinema, Hindi films, music, and international performances.
