Dragon Quest creator comments on why DQ9 was a Nintendo DS exclusive, team was "a little disheartened" by the fan reaction

Yuji Horii, the visionary creator behind the esteemed Dragon Quest franchise, recently offered profound insights into the pivotal decision to launch Dragon Quest IX exclusively on the Nintendo DS. This choice marked a significant departure from the series’ established tradition of introducing new mainline entries on home consoles. Prior to this, the gaming world had celebrated Dragon Quest VIII on the PlayStation 2, which captivated audiences with its groundbreaking fully 3D graphics – a first for the series and a technological marvel at the time. Consequently, when Square Enix unveiled Dragon Quest IX and began to showcase its innovative direction, many dedicated fans expressed considerable surprise and, in some cases, disappointment.

In a candid Famitsu interview, Horii elaborated on the rationale behind this strategic shift. He explained that the Nintendo DS platform offered an unparalleled advantage: “quick and easy play over local networks.” This capability facilitated a host of novel connectivity features, most notably the groundbreaking inclusion of four-player local multiplayer. Horii highlighted that while local network play was a nascent and often cumbersome feature in other games of that era, the Nintendo DS streamlined the experience. Players could simply power on their devices and instantly connect with others, a system that Horii deemed “amazing” and one they were eager to leverage for Dragon Quest IX.

The initial reception from the fan base, however, proved to be quite polarized. Horii openly admitted that the development team was “actually a little disheartened” by the backlash. He recalled the prevalent criticism, with many exclaiming, “What? On Nintendo DS?” This reaction stemmed largely from the high expectations set by Dragon Quest VIII’s console-based, visually rich 3D environment. Fans had anticipated a natural progression in graphical fidelity and an experience akin to its predecessor.

Horii conveyed that their vision for Dragon Quest IX on the DS was centered around fostering a new, engaging form of gameplay. They envisioned players easily downloading quests and embarking on adventures collaboratively with friends, believing this would constitute a uniquely entertaining experience. Despite his earnest explanations, it’s worth noting that Horii wasn’t initially entirely convinced about the Nintendo DS exclusivity. Prior revelations have indicated that he required some persuasion from Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino to fully embrace the platform.

As it stands, Dragon Quest IX remains solely accessible on the Nintendo DS. Nevertheless, given Square Enix’s recent prolific activity in remaking various installments within the franchise, it seems plausible that a re-release on modern platforms could eventually materialize, allowing a new generation of players to experience this distinctive RPG. Such a move would undoubtedly be welcomed by both long-time aficionados and newcomers eager to delve into this unique chapter of the Dragon Quest saga. The evolution of technology within gaming continually reshapes how classic titles are experienced.
