Celtic’s formidable start to the current campaign gained further momentum as they comfortably dispatched Dundee United, securing their berth in the League Cup quarter-finals. The match, played at Tannadice, saw the visitors establish a commanding lead early on, effectively ending any hopes of a Dundee United upset.
The initial breakthroughs came in the first half, with Auston Trusty opening the scoring with a well-placed header. This was quickly followed by Camilo Duran, who capitalized on a close-range opportunity to double Celtic’s advantage. While Dundee United found themselves trailing, they were not without their moments of frustration, striking the woodwork an astonishing five times throughout the game. This repeated misfortune, coupled with some perceived defensive frailties, ultimately proved to be their undoing.
The tie was decisively put to bed when Sebastian Tounekti orchestrated a swift counter-attack, expertly slotting home a goal that left Dundee United with a mountain to climb. The rout was then completed in spectacular fashion by Benjamin Nygren, who unleashed a superb fourth goal, ensuring Celtic’s seamless progression to the next round of the competition.
Notably, the fixture marked the return of manager Martin O’Neill to the Celtic dugout. O’Neill had been absent from the previous weekend’s Scottish Premiership victory against Kilmarnock, following a brief hospital stay. His presence seemed to galvanize the team, who, despite enjoying significant possession early on, had to weather an initial storm from Dundee United. Julius Eskesen and Emmanuel Agyei both came perilously close to giving the home side the lead, with their efforts cannoning off the same post.
