Dungeons & Dragons game Warlock gets a first proper trailer, showing single-player action gameplay

New Dungeons & Dragons Action Game ‘Warlock’ Revealed with First Gameplay Trailer

During this evening’s Gamescom Opening Night Live showcase, fans of the tabletop titan were treated to an exciting first look at the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons game Warlock, which is currently in development at Wizards of the Coast’s in-house studio, Invoke.

The trailer opens by grounding the player in D&D lore, showcasing the protagonist—a Warlock—as she formalizes her pact with a patron. In true tabletop fashion, this moment serves as the catalyst for the powerful, supernatural abilities that define her combat style throughout the rest of the footage.

While the Dungeons & Dragons license is often associated with turn-based strategy or isometric RPGs, this title takes a distinct departure, opting for a third-person, single-player action experience. The D&D influence is woven directly into the world design and the mechanical complexity of the protagonist’s kit rather than through traditional tabletop dice rolls.

The gameplay trailer highlights a variety of iconic fantasy settings, from a gritty, ramshackle town to an atmospheric dungeon. Combat appears fluid and highly reactive, blending flashy spellcasting with tactical mobility. In one impressive sequence, the Warlock dodges an incoming monster attack by teleporting, leaving a decoy behind to distract her foe. Another segment demonstrates environmental synergy: the character casts a spell to conjure a torrential downpour, then follows up with a series of lightning strikes that appear to deal bonus damage due to the stormy conditions.

While the footage offers a high-energy “vertical slice” of the game’s potential, details regarding the narrative and deep-dive mechanics remain sparse. As is typical with early reveals, the game is expected to evolve significantly as the development cycle progresses.

Players eager to dive into this new adventure will have to be patient, as the title is currently slated for a 2027 release window. As Wizards of the Coast and Invoke continue to refine the project, the industry will be watching closely to see how this action-focused spin on the classic TTRPG franchise shapes up.
