Elena Rybakina’s bid to dethrone Aryna Sabalenka ends in heartbreak after Cincinnati injury | Tennis News

Rybakina’s World No. 1 Ambitions Sidelined by Injury at Cincinnati Open

The highly anticipated showdown for tennis supremacy at the Cincinnati Open ended in an unfortunate retirement on Thursday, as Elena Rybakina was forced to withdraw from her quarterfinal clash against Iga Swiatek due to an aggravating left ankle injury.

The development serves as a significant blow to the Kazakh star, effectively ending her current campaign to displace Aryna Sabalenka as the WTA world No. 1.

A Premature Exit

The match began with promise before rapidly descending into distress for the former Wimbledon champion. With Swiatek leading 4-1 in the opening set and Rybakina serving at 40-15, the world noticed a visible decline in the Kazakh’s mobility. Following a demanding rally that culminated in a sharp passing shot from Swiatek, Rybakina struggled to execute a half-volley, ultimately doubling over in visible pain.

Despite attempts to continue, her movement was severely hindered; she proved unable to push off her back foot for serves. Following a medical timeout, Rybakina conceded that she could not continue, citing significant pain that left her struggling to walk off the court.

"Of course now I feel not the greatest; I couldn’t even push from the serve," Rybakina said during her post-match comments. "It’s been bothering me for a long period of time. It was under control, but after playing a lot of matches in Canada and coming here playing two matches in a row… one wrong movement, one landing, and something happened."

Implications for the Rankings

The timing of the injury could not be worse for Rybakina, who entered the tournament with a clear path to the top of the rankings. Following Sabalenka’s surprising fourth-round exit at the hands of Sara Bejlek, Rybakina needed a run to the Cincinnati final to officially secure the No. 1 spot. With her withdrawal, Sabalenka will retain the top ranking heading into the final Grand Slam of the year.

Rybakina is now awaiting the results of an MRI to determine the severity of the ankle issue, leaving her status for the upcoming US Open in doubt.

Swiatek Advances to Semifinals

For Iga Swiatek, the victory secures a spot in the semifinals, where she is set to face Jessica Pegula. The Polish star, who is currently defending her Toronto title, remains on track to potentially become only the second woman since 2004 to successfully defend the Cincinnati crown—a feat previously achieved by Serena Williams in 2014-15.

Despite her progression, Swiatek remained gracious, emphasizing the human element over the competitive stakes. "I hope Elena will be fine. The next tournament is the priority. I know this one is important as well, but US Open is US Open," Swiatek said. "She’s super close to being No. 1 in the world. It’s a shame. But health is a priority."

As the tennis community turns its focus toward New York, the focus shifts to whether this Cincinnati injury will force Rybakina to miss the season’s final major, or if she can recover in time to reignite her challenge for the top ranking.
