Garstang’s flood gate has been broken since 2022 and work has been ongoing to replace the broken gate.
The Environment Agency has issued a major update on the repairs of a broken floodgate on the River Wyre.
An Environment Agency spokesperson told The Gazette: “We successfully removed the broken floodgate at Garstang yesterday using a 350 tonne reinforced crane.
“Temporary stop logs have been put in place to ensure that the flood storage basin can still be used effectively without compromising the standard of protection from flooding to downstream residents and businesses.
“This is the culmination of years of work, and we are now on track to complete all repairs by October.”
In order to fix the East Gate and accommodate this large crane on site, significant strengthening needed to be made to the existing crane pads, which was completed last year.

The next immediate steps for the Environment Agency will be undertaking detailed inspections of the gate and concrete, fabricating and installing the new hinge for the gate and replacing other component parts. The stop logs will remain in place until the East Gate has been repaired, which is currently programmed by the end of October.
