In a significant move to bolster environmental sustainability and foster community development, the Environment Protection Fund has recently given its stamp of approval to a comprehensive suite of projects. These initiatives, spanning diverse sectors such as sustainable agriculture, the restoration of vital nature reserves, innovative water harvesting techniques, widespread recycling efforts, and the expansion of green spaces, underscore a renewed commitment to investing in a greener future. The formal endorsements were granted during a pivotal meeting of the Fund’s Board of Directors, convened at the Ministry of Environment and presided over by Minister Ayman Suleiman.
The newly allocated funding is strategically designed to empower marginalized groups, particularly youth and women residing in rural communities. Beyond this crucial social aspect, the projects aim to fortify food security, champion environmentally sound production methodologies, safeguard delicate ecosystems, broaden the application of water harvesting practices, and ultimately, increase the prevalence of vital green infrastructure.
A variety of community organizations are poised to benefit from this expansive program. Notable projects include the “Petra Biscuit House,” spearheaded by the Petra Springs Environmental Society, which promises local economic growth. The Basmat Al-Khair Women’s Cooperative Society will implement a dual initiative focusing on water harvesting and the establishment of home gardens, promoting self-sufficiency. The Himmet Nisaa Al-Balqa Charity Society will launch its “Map and Fabric” project, and the Jordan Environment Society will undertake an initiative specifically aimed at enhancing rural community engagement in environmental justice issues. Further support has been extended to the Ayadi Al-Badia Agricultural Cooperative Society, enabling them to develop a project centered on drying fruits and vegetables using renewable energy sources, showcasing a commitment to sustainable practices.
Crucially, substantial financing has also been earmarked for the restoration and enhancement of numerous protected areas and natural sites across the region. This includes vital locations such as the Yarmouk Nature Reserve, Mujib Biosphere Reserve, Azraq Wetland Reserve, Dana Biosphere Reserve, and Birkat Al-Ara’is. These efforts are specifically designed to reinforce biodiversity protection, refine the management of invaluable natural resources, and ensure the long-term sustainability and ecological integrity of these irreplaceable sites.
Beyond conservation, the board has also championed the rehabilitation and subsequent operation of the Mujib agricultural project. The ambitious plan envisions transforming this into a national exemplar for modern farming techniques. An integral component of this initiative is the establishment of an applied agricultural academy. This specialized institution will focus on non-traditional farming methods, offering practical training to young individuals in innovative, environmentally friendly agricultural practices. This not only equips them with crucial skills but also significantly improves their access to burgeoning employment opportunities within the green sector.
The funding package additionally encompasses the creation of two new environmental parks. One will be situated at the Pilgrims City, also known as Al-Waha, in Ma’an Governorate, while the other will be developed at Aqaba University College. These parks are intended to expand critical green spaces and serve as catalysts for promoting heightened environmental awareness within their respective local communities.
Furthermore, a pioneering circular-economy project has received approval. This initiative focuses on the manufacturing of outdoor benches and waste containers using recycled plastic. These products will then be strategically placed in public parks and recreational areas. The core objectives of this project are to amplify the reuse of plastic waste, cultivate and support industries grounded in recycling and innovation, and ultimately, promote a more judicious and efficient utilization of resources.
The Ministry of Environment has affirmed that these diverse projects align perfectly with the Fund’s strategic approach. This approach prioritizes the financing of initiatives that deliver tangible environmental benefits while simultaneously fostering sustainable development. By supporting local communities, generating opportunities for youth and women, diligently protecting natural resources, and actively advancing the nation’s green economy, these endeavors represent a holistic commitment to a prosperous and environmentally responsible future. Looking ahead, the Ministry has announced that the application window for the Environment Protection Fund’s 2027 project cycle is anticipated to open during the fourth quarter of 2026, with detailed requirements, eligibility criteria, and funding mechanisms to be communicated at a later date.
