Fable Won't Demand Over 100 Hours of Your Time on PS5

Playground Games’ New Fable Rejects the Trend of “100-Hour” RPGs

In an era where the Role-Playing Game genre is increasingly defined by massive, sprawling epics that demand upwards of 100 hours of a player’s time, the upcoming reboot of Fable is taking a refreshingly restrained approach. Developers at Playground Games have confirmed that the highly anticipated title is intentionally designed to mirror the modest, focused scope of the original trilogy rather than chasing the “mega-game” industry trend.

In a recent interview with Polygon, associate game director Will Kennedy outlined the expected playtime for the title. Players can anticipate a main questline lasting approximately 15 to 20 hours. For those looking to dive deeper into the world of Albion, an additional 15 to 20 hours of side quests and open-world exploration is expected to round out the experience.

This structure firmly aligns the reboot with the legacy of the franchise. According to player-reported data on HowLongToBeat, even the longest titles in the original series—Fable II and Fable III—offered main narratives spanning roughly 13 hours. By effectively doubling that length for completionists, Playground Games is honoring the pacing that made the original games fan favorites while providing a modern content density.

While the primary story remains concise, the developers are quick to note that the game’s longevity isn’t solely tied to quests. Game director Craig Littler pointed to the series’ classic life-simulation elements—such as property management and social systems—as a way for players to extend their journey indefinitely. “If that’s what you want to do,” Littler noted, “you could literally play it forever.”

This commitment to a manageable runtime is a strategic choice for the studio. As the gaming landscape becomes more crowded, many players find the time investment required by modern open-world titles to be daunting. By avoiding the “triple-digit hour” trap, Fable positions itself as an accessible, high-quality adventure that respects the player’s time—a welcome relief for those feeling the effects of RPG fatigue.

The timing of this design philosophy is particularly notable, as the title is slated to launch during a packed release window in February 2027. Amidst a crowded field of upcoming releases, the fact that Fable won’t demand over 100 hours of your time makes it a highly attractive prospect for gamers balancing multiple heavy-hitting titles.

Does a more focused, 30-to-40-hour RPG experience sound more appealing to you than the current industry standard of 100+ hour behemoths? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
